About

I am an avid outdoorsman who enjoys everything from hiking to bushcraft to hunting, fishing, and camping. I enjoy my time in the woods with a tent as much as I enjoy the annual cabin trips my wife and I make. I'm also of the mindset that even an hour in the woods can refresh the mind more then a day sitting in a chair talking about going into the woods. I was doing this bushcraft thing a long time before it was called that here in the US, way before it was the cool thing to do, and it seems I'm still doing it while it's now become yesterdays news. Camped in the back country from the Adirondacks to the Catskills and some places in-between.

I am no expert on anything, so if it seems like I'm being arrogant, rude or opinionated, I can assure you, I'm not. I can be direct at times, and my sense of humor can be dry and dark at times.

I like to share experience, sometimes teach skills, and just my adventures sometimes. Whether I'm successful or not, for me, it's more about the journey. "View From Here" is the editorial page where I'll share my thoughts on topics. Heads up, my opinion on certain things is greatly different from the general masses. I'm not always in line with the cookie cutter thoughts on a lot of things. I use the term "cookie cutter" as in the general order of things poured forth by the masses.

Posts here will probably be random. There are times I have scheduled trips planned, but more often I might suddenly decide to head off into he woods for a little hike and I might share that here. I'll post trips ranging from a couple of hours of outdoors time, to state park camping, dispersed camping, and the cabin trips we make in the ADK's (ADK means Adirondack Park for those who may not know).

At times I may post practicing something in my yard as well. One thing I have always tried to encourage in people is practice things at home so you know you can accomplish them while off in the woods. It doesn't do any good if you buy that $500 knife and it breaks trying to cut a potato in camp. It doesn't do any good if you buy a ferro rod and don't get some practice on how to use it before you need to use it to make a fire in the dark. Know the limits of your gear, and yourself.

I created this blog as an accompaniment to my You Tube channel. I'll post gear talk on the stuff I use and why. I'll post trip reports here. I'll post some DIY stuff and even maybe a few how-to's. I've also added a link to the actual forum associated with the channel. I figure I'm better off posting my content here on my own space these days.

Most of my gear is on the budget end of the spectrum, so most of the gear talk with be sort of focused on gear for the average person.

I also want to take a moment to add something here. I don't get paid for this blog, my forum, or my YouTube channel. The ads placed are not my doing, they are there from the relevant hosts. I have zero control over them and they are selected due to the algorithms of your electronic device, what's popular, and your browser cookies, not by me.

The following pictures are a couple of years old, they are from a challenge I was involved in at that time. This is pretty much a text book...
